Matthew Hamilton - Conductor
Matthew Hamilton is an inspiring choral leader, celebrated for his work with esteemed choirs and ensembles across a broad repertoire.
Particularly renowned as a director of symphonic choruses, Matthew currently holds two major positions in the UK: Choral Director at the Hallé (since 2015) and Director of Choirs and Singing at Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (since 2023). At both establishments he has been involved in large-scale choral projects, acclaimed recordings and broadcasts, and performances across the UK and abroad, in addition to leading open-access singing events for hundreds of of participants. Previous roles include Musical Director of New London Chamber Choir, and Associate Chorus Director of London Symphony Chorus.
As a guest conductor Matthew has appeared with BBC Singers, Netherlands Chamber Choir, Choeur de Radio France, ChorWerk Ruhr, and many of the UK’s symphonic choruses. He has worked regularly with the National Youth Orchestra, encouraging and enabling the orchestra to sing as part of their performances. He has prepared choirs for conductors including Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner, Valery Gergiev, Daniel Harding, Domingo Hindoyan, Fabio Luisi, Michael Tilson Thomas, Andris Nelsons, Gianandrea Noseda, and Kahchun Wong, and for festivals including Edinburgh International Festival, St Magnus Festival, Manchester International Festival, Brighton Festival, Spitalfields Festival, and BBC Proms, where he has worked on music from Birtwistle to the Pet Shop Boys.
Matthew read music at Oxford before studying at the University of Manchester and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD). He was made an inaugural Honorary Associate of RWCMD in 2018.
